Real books vs. eBooks: I’m torn

Better than a real book? I'm not so sure ...

I’m a prolific reader — so much so that I almost had a nervous breakdown when I recently forced myself to get rid of hundreds of books. (Fear not, I kept just as many!) So maybe I’m a bit of a hoarder, too, but that’s a post for another time.

What I want to talk about today is eBooks that you can read on the Kindle, the Nook, the iPad.

It makes sense to buy and read books electronically (see paragraph about hoarding books). It saves space, the books aren’t as expensive and you can carry around dozens — even hundreds — on one little device.

So the last two books I bought were on my iPad.  I tried to love it. But I don’t. Which surprises me, because I love technology and always want the latest thing.

I figured, though, that I would learn to live with the idea of reading books electronically.

And then I was telling a friend how much I enjoyed one of the books I had read — Bossypants by Tina Fey.

“Can I borrow it?” he asked.

Dammit! No, of course not. Because it’s on my iPad.

Now as any reader knows, the best part of reading a book is then sharing it.

Books, 1. eBooks, 0.
